killer of dreams, thus I have long concluded that if their is such a thing as a devil, his name is fear.
Let's be clear, there is healthy fear, the feeling that alert us to danger, and set in motion our automatic response systems for survival. Then their is the irrational fear that plague us, cause us to shelve our dreams, act without thinking and behave in irationally. The fear that once subside, and your head is clear causes you to have a healthy laugh at yourself, or sometimes wanting to give yourself a good kick in the shin.
Take for instance the lady, a very nice christian lady who got her 6 page statement, and of the six pages, her eyes when straight to the section what shows zero, zero! She called me in a panic. Of course, we started from the top of the first page, and right there on the first page is a summery of her investment holdings, showing a healthy return for the year. This is someone I've had as a client for a very long time so I joked with her, and was able to take her to where she probably didnt expect "Jane, you know you have a fear of being broke?" Why else would you get a statement and only notice a section that shows zeros? She laughed and said "yes, you know, I really am afraid of running out of money"!
That very same day, a dear friend and client for a very long time was coming to meet me at the office. She works in the city but because she does like to drive on the highway she takes a local route to work. She called for direction to get to my office using her usual route to and from work. I let her know that there is a more direct route to the office from her work, that's the route I take myself and going her way would take an extra 45 minutes. She let me know that she would not take my route because once she took that route and missed the local turn off and ended up on the highway and it was not fun! In as much as I tried topersuade her how easy it it she just wouldnt budge. A past mistake and fear of driving on the highway causes her to lose 45 minutes in traffic. Funny enough, the first time I got onto the highway after getting my drivers licence was by mistake. I was so nervous, my knees knocked so hard I could hardly keep my foot on the gas pedal. I calmed myself and made it safely to my destination and to this day I perfer highway driving!
Fear can disguise itself as concern, and it is transferrable! Yes, you have to be careful and pay attention otherwise you may unintentionally pick up someone's fear. Also be careful who you go to for advice because if you are seeking advice or counsel from someone who is fearful and is unable to be objective, that advise is going to be skewed based on the advisers reality. This happens all the time and without warning. There are many, many books, and programs devoted to the topic. The more aware you become, the more resources will come to your attention.
Feeling frustrated that your are not progressing in the direction you desire? Check to see if "the monkey on your back" is fear. Analyze the situation and press forward in spite of the fear. Seek help if you need to but dont let the "devil" win! Conquor your fear and not only overcome, but be victorious.
Blessings,
MissSam
